Frosting First

Frosting can make or break any dessert, so it’s important to get it right.

Our buttercream recipe is perfect for decorating any dessert.  You can make it with 5 ingredients in minutes-so easy, so delicious!

*An Important Note:  We recommend using the Medium Consistency version of our recipe.  A little stiffer consistency to the buttercream will help the piped mane and unicorn horns hold their shape.

  • Set aside about 1 C of buttercream to make your multi-colored frosting for the mane.
  • Frost your cupcakes with a layer of white buttercream to your desired level of thickness.
  • Make sure to reserve about ¾ – 1 C of white buttercream to create the unicorn ears and horns.

Once your cupcakes are frosted to your liking, you’re ready to make the key component to any unicorn-the horn!

How to Make an Easy Unicorn Horn Out of Buttercream

There are some cute options out there for ready-made unicorn horns.  If you’re determined to create the horns yourself, figuring out how to make them can be a challenge, especially if you’re not a pro decorator.  With some trial and error, we came up with a no-fuss DIY horn with a little sparkle!

  • Cut wax paper into squares, about 2 x 2 should do the trick.  Stick a toothpick in the center of each square.
  • Grab Wilton Tip 7 and a piping (or plastic) bag and fill it with that 1 cup of white buttercream you set aside earlier.
  • Hold the toothpick underneath the wax paper square.  Pipe a tight circle around the toothpick to make the horn  as tall as you want.

*There are 2 ways to do this:

  1. Hold the toothpick still and work your way around.
  2. Spin the toothpick as you pipe.

  • Spray the horn with the Gold Wilton Color Mist.
  • Finish off with some Yellow Sugar Sprinkles
  • Remove the wax paper square and stick the toothpick slightly off the center of the cupcake.  Stick the cupcakes in the fridge for at least 20 minutes, this allows the horns to firm up.

Your unicorns are ready for the “mane event.” 😉  Every unicorn needs a bright multi-colored mane, but how do you get all of those colors in each neatly piped little star?

It’s easier than you might think!!!

How to Make Multi-Colored Frosting

There are a few ways to make frosting with multiple colors.  Before you combine the colors, mix them up first:

  • Take 1 C of white buttercream that you set aside earlier and divide it into  ¼ C amounts for each color.  Use any combo of colors you like.  For these cupcakes, we chose:

~Teal (Wilton icing color Teal)

~Purple (Wilton icing color Violet)

~Pink (Wilton icing color Rose)

*You’ll use the remaining 1/4 C of buttercream to make black frosting for the eyes.

  • Use a toothpick to swipe out some icing color and mix it into the frosting.

~More icing color = bold and rich shades

~Less icing color = soft pastel shades

use less icing color for soft pastel shades and more icing color for dark bold shades
  • Lay flat a piece of plastic wrap and apply a strip of each color.
  • Roll the frosting up like a log, pinch and twist the plastic wrap on each end, and then cut off one end.
  • Prepare a piping or plastic bag with Wilton’s Open Star Tip 133.   Put the tri-colored buttercream roll into the piping bag and make sure it fits snugly.

How to Decorate Your Cupcake Like a Unicorn

You’ve frosted the cupcakes and the horns are in place.  It’s time to complete the look with a colorful mane, ears, and smiling eyes.  These techniques are basic and beginner-friendly.

We used a simple design to pipe the manes for these unicorns.

  • Pipe 3  small stars around the horn, think of a triangle shape.

  • Pipe 2 more stars on an angle on each side, keeping again with a triangle shape.

Using Wilton Tip 7, pipe the ears in white buttercream on either side of the mane.

The final step: use Wilton Tip 2 and black frosting to create a pair of smiling eyes.

Follow These Steps:

  • For the chocolate unicorns, you can melt the candy melts in the microwave.  Pour the mixture into a piping or plastic bag and cut off a small opening at the tip.
  • Fill the molds not quite all the way.  Otherwise, the chocolate may spill over and you’ll end up with misshapen unicorns.
  • Gently tap the filled molds on the counter to release any air bubbles in the melted candy mixture.
  • Refrigerate for about 20 minutes or until firm.
  •  We frosted our cupcakes with a thin base layer of white buttercream, you may opt not to-this is personal preference.

  • Using Wilton Tip 2D, pipe large swirls onto your cupcakes.
