Is it possible to bake a cake by the slice?  Yep, all you need is some cake batter and a silicone baking mold to bake what is known as a pizza cake.  A cake made of individual slices and usually presented in a round pizza shape, the pizza cake is a fun and trendy way to serve dessert at your next birthday party, shower, or special occasion.  Impress your guests while keeping it simple for you.  In fact, you could say making a pizza cake is a piece o’ cake!

What is a Pizza Cake?

A pizza cake is basically a cake with a round pizza shape separated into slices.  They’re great for parties and birthdays because the slices are ready to be plated and handed out to guests.

Who doesn’t want to skip the dreaded “Who wants to cut the cake?” moment?  There’s no mess, no knife.  Just perfectly uniform slices of delicious cake.

One of the coolest things about pizza cakes is their versatility.  You can make them as small or big as you’d like because you bake it by the slice.  We’ve baked up to 30 slices of cake for a birthday celebration, but you could easily make a pizza cake with as little as 4 slices-the extra slices are freezable.

Pizza cakes are impressive with their eye-catching designs.  They may look like a lot of work, but they’re really not.

All you need is a silicone baking mold.  Most molds are for 8 cake slices.  One box of cake mix will make you 16 slices and leave enough batter left over for 2-3 cupcakes.  For that reason, we recommend getting a set of 2 molds.

How to Make a Pizza Cake

Making a pizza cake is pretty simple.  All you need is a batch of cake batter and a handful of baking supplies.

Good to Know Before You Get Started:

Yields 16 slices + 2-3 cupcakes.  Instead of cupcakes, sometimes we make a mini cake for the center.

We use a box mix for our cake batter.  Two Sisters have some great tips for doctoring up your box cake mix so that no one will know the difference!

Baking time may vary.  Most of our cake baking magic takes place in Tammy’s gas oven, and she knows her oven well.  She has found that 20-22 minutes is the sweet spot for the cake slices and 16-18 minutes is spot-on for the cupcakes.  All ovens are different, so keep an eye out and adjust the baking time.

How to Tell if Your Cake Slices and Cupcakes are Done:

  • The sides start to pull away from the mold/liners
  • The tops are springy
  • Inserted toothpick in middle comes out clean
pizza cake slices are done baking when they pull away from the edges and have springy tops

Decorating a Pizza Cake

Many pizza cakes are decorated with buttercream using various piping techniques and a complimentary color scheme.  The great thing about this is you can’t really mess it up because there’s no “right or wrong” way to design your cake slices.

Here are some helpful tips to help you get started with your unique cake design.

Think about the theme you’re going for and base your color palette on this.  For example, we based this cake off the colors in our business logo!

to create an interesting design, use different piping tips on each pizza cake slice

Use a handful of piping tips and/or techniques.

Some of Tammy’s favorite Wilton tips are:

  • 1M-open star tip for large swirls and rosettes
  • #104-petal tip for ribbons (our favorite!)
  • open star tips:

                      ~4B, 16, 18, 32, and 363

Apply the same design pattern on cake slices across from each otherthis helps create some balance and symmetry.

Sprinkles and chocolates are perfect finishing details.

Have fun with the presentation-”think outside the circle”!  Play around with shapes or try different layouts like arranging the pieces sporadically on a platter.

With pizza cakes, the creative possibilities are endless!
