cake with woodland theme decorations

Cute forest animals and charming elements of nature team up for this woodland theme cake.  A forest floor made of buttercream is the perfect spot for adorable animal toppers to gather.  The mushrooms and tree stumps not only look amazing, but they also taste amazing-yes, they’re completely edible!  This design is perfect for your next birthday or baby shower!  Learn how easy it is to decorate a cake with this woodland theme!

Enchanting Woodland Theme Cake

Woodland themes capture the enchantment of the forest with cuddly critters and the colors of nature.  These themes are a terrific choice for birthdays and baby showers.

My daughter is crazy about animals and chose that for her birthday theme.  Foxes are her favorite animal (right now), so we made her a mini fox cake and this woodland theme pizza cake.

Pizza Cake Design

A pizza cake is basically a cake with a round pizza shape separated into slices.  They’re great for parties and birthdays because the slices are ready to be plated and handed out to guests.  There’s no mess, no knife, just perfectly uniform slices of delicious cake.

Buttercream Piping Details

The buttercream details on this cake are beginner-friendly, simple, and quick.  We started with our smooth buttercream, tinted various shades of green, and used a Grass Tip #233 to create the forest floorBright red flowers made with a star tip add a pop of color.

Woodland Theme Cake Toppers and Edible Decorations

The adorable forest animal toppers are part of this woodland decoration kit on Amazon.  The set includes a total of 15 toppers along with party decorations, which is very convenient.

The wow factors of this design are the chocolate mushrooms and tree stumps.  They add a whimsical element and also taste delicious.

These little treats are actually made of candy melts and almond bark, not chocolate.  We like to use candy melts and almond bark because they are easy to work with and perform well with candy molds.  They have a smooth vanilla flavor similar to white chocolate but can also be found in other flavors including chocolate.  Head over to eHow to learn more about almond bark vs. chocolate.

How to Decorate a Cake with a Woodland Theme

Each feature of this cake is described below, including the needed supplies as well as helpful tips on how to make them.

Buttercream Colors & Piping Tips

For the Grass:

  • Buttercream (~1 & 1/2 Cups)
  • Icing Colors (all Wilton brand):
    • Leaf Green
    • Moss Green
    • Leaf Green + Juniper Green
  • Grass Tip #233
  • Piping Bags
  • Couplers

The forest floor is easy to create using buttercream and one piping tip-Grass Tip #233.  We chose to use 3 shades of green to add some dimension.  We used Leaf Green, Moss Green, and a combo of Leaf Green and Juniper Green for the third shade.

We used our delicious and easy buttercream recipe for our frosting.  When tinting frosting, we usually start with a small amount of icing color and then add more as we see fit until we achieve the shade we’re going for.

Once you have the buttercream dyed to your liking, insert couplers into the piping bags and fill the bags with frosting.  *You’ll want to make sure and use couplers for this project so you can easily switch the Grass Tip from bag to bag.

Check out Wilton’s site for help on how to use couplers.

The grass is simple to create.  Apply light pressure to the piping bag and pull up towards you, releasing the pressure on the bag.  Repeat (and repeat and repeat!) to cover the cake with a textured grassy base for the cute forest scene.

For the Flowers:

  • Buttercream (~1/4 to 1/2 Cup)
  • Icing Colors:
  • Any Star Tip
  • Tip #2
  • Piping Bags

We added some flowers for a pop of color to break up the green grass.  We chose red flowers with a yellow center to complement the color scheme of the cake toppers, but you can choose any colors you like!

We stuck with small flowers to accent the grassy area, but more elaborate flowers would also look great on this cake.  If you’re making small flowers like ours, you will only need about ¼ to ½ Cup of buttercream.

We used The Sugar Art’s Red Rose powdered food coloring to tint the buttercream for our flowers.  If you haven’t used The Sugar Art’s products, definitely give them a try!  A little of the powder goes a long way, and their products produce vibrant beautiful shades.

We used Wilton Golden Yellow icing color for the flower buds.

For small flowers like ours, use any Star Tip, like a #16 or #18.  We used a #2 Tip for the yellow buds, but you could easily cut a small hole in a piping bag and use that to make the buds as well.

Edible Woodland Cake Decorations: Mushrooms & Tree Stumps

The eye-catchers of this cake design are definitely the mushrooms and tree stumps.  They not only look amazing, but they are also completely edible!

For the Mushrooms:

  • Wilton Candy Melts
    • Red
    • Green
    • Yellow
  • Vanilla Almond Bark
  • Mushroom Candy Mold
  • Piping Bags or Plastic Bags
  • Food-Grade Paintbrush (optional)

The mushroom tops are made with red and green candy melts.  Vanilla almond bark with a hint of yellow candy melt mixed in creates the muddied white color used for the stems and dots on the tops.

We found this cute set of mushroom candy molds on Amazon.  Silicone molds are our first choice because they are pliable and easy to work with.

For the 3-D mushroom in the photo, we used this mushroom mold also from Amazon.  It worked fine and the mushroom looks really cool, but the downside is you can only make one mushroom at a time, so we opted to make one 3-D mushroom for the center of the cake and use the other molds for the rest of the mushrooms.

  • Follow the melting instructions on the packaging.
  • For better control, use piping bags or plastic bags with a small hole cut off the tip.  Pour the mixtures into bags.
  • Fill the white dots on the mushroom tops first.  *It may be helpful to paint the mixture on with a food-grade paintbrush.  Place in the freezer for about 5 minutes.
  • Fill in the colored portion of the mushrooms and the stem.  Blend these two together slightly with a toothpick.  Place in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Remove from molds and place on the cake.

For the Tree Stumps:

  • Chocolate Almond Bark
  • Vanilla Almond Bark
  • Yellow Candy Melts
  • White Candy Melts
  • Piping Bags or Plastic Bags
  • Food-Grade Paintbrush
  • Tree Stump Mold

We wanted the grain of the “wood” to stand out, so we used 2 color shades for the top of the stump:

~The golden rings are yellow candy melts with added white candy melts.

~The off-white portion of the stump is made of vanilla almond bark with a touch of yellow candy melt.

~The brown portion is chocolate almond bark.

  • Follow the melting instructions on the packaging.
  • For better control, use piping bags or plastic bags with a small hole cut off the tip.  Pour the mixtures into bags.
  • Use a food-grade paintbrush to paint the golden rings in the ridges of the mold.  Place in the freezer for a few minutes.
  • Pipe or paint the off-white mixture onto the rest of the top of the stump.  Be careful not to fill in to the edge of the mold-brown mixture will go here.  Place in the freezer for a few minutes.
  • Fill in the rest of the mold with brown chocolate.  Freeze for about 10 minutes.
  • After the stumps have completely hardened, remove them from the molds.  Place on the cake!

Woodland Theme Cake Toppers

Bring the cake to life with the cute forest animals, trees, and tents.  These are woodland cupcake toppers but work just as well on top of a cake.  This is a great set with a total of 14 cupcake toppers and one large cake topper.  (We didn’t even use all of them!)  I love that you also get party decorations with this Woodland Theme Decorations kit-added bonus!!!

In a time crunch or if you opt to skip the chocolate mushrooms and stumps, you could simply (and quickly!) scatter these across the cake top and still have a really fun woodland theme cake.

Other Fun Ideas for a Woodland Theme Cake

The base of this woodland theme could be interchanged with different details.  For example, trade the animal toppers for some cute little gnomes.  This theme would also be perfect for the Smurfs or Snow White !!!
